Is 'Y' in Tanya a Vowel or a Consonant?
Question:
Is the y in Tanya classed as a vowel or consonant?
Answer: (Responses to questions rely on the accuracy of the name and birth date provided with the question. Typographical errors or incomplete information can result in an incorrect response.)
I assume Tanya is a person's name.
Unfortunately, there is no clear and direct answer. It depends on how the name is pronounced.
In general, when the "y" sounds like a consonant when the name is pronounced, it is a consonant. Otherwise, a vowel.
In numerology calculations for a name — whether a person's name, an organization's name, street name, … — the letter "y" is most often treated as a vowel. (Numerology reading input forms are character based, not sound based, which eliminates automatic determination.)
Several times, at a form where a person types the name for a reading, I have seen an option to change the letter "y" from vowel to consonant. But those options seem to be rare.
The software for the free reading at this website and all the calculators at our other numerology website treat the letter "y" as if it is a vowel.
