He wants me to change.
I undertsand that my ex and I can't be together right now but I don't want to lose him forever. I am trying to change and he always said that he would wait but this time he seems adamant that it is over.

Being a different person on the outside than one actually is on the inside in order to please someone else provides only a facade.
Granted, people can change who they are, inside and out. There is a gradual change all the time, and sometimes changes are sudden.
However, changing oneself only to please someone else is not satisfactory for the person doing the changing and usually ends up pleasing nobody.
Anyone who demands the other person change in order to continue a relatinship is not a high order of being. Now, if he initiated the idea of changing himself into the type of person who resonated well with you, that would be a grand gesture, especially if it was followed through.
